Interactive music experiments are a set of experiments questioning the need of being a musician in today's 'live electronic music' concept. The setup consists of several midi devices which control different parts of the composed piece. All the devices are connected to a computer from which the piece is played. The input from the users are quantized so that the user can't make huge timing errors. When there are no non-musical timing errors, most of the errors that the users make can also be thought as arrangement decisions.
The CDMIDI controller (the one with a CD on it-obviously:)) lets the user to play an improvised solo with a softsynth connected to it. The user only decides if she/he wants to go up or down in the melody. This brings up the question, "does someone have to be a musician to play a melodic solo?"
All the devices that have been used in these experiments are described in detail in the hardware section of this site.
In the video "Interactive Music Experiments 1" musicians jam with the setup, in Interactive Music Experiments 2" you can enjoy the fantastic jam of a non-musician group.
